When Fashion and Nature Collide -Feline Good

Feline Good

Feline couture is feline good! Cats flourish at being the ruler of their domain. Who cannot relate to being King or Queen of their castle. The power of animal fashion is everywhere in pattern. It has purred its way into print and our hearts. Cats have been featured on runways for years as cat motifs have ruled many fashion lines. The cat inspiration hit us and we fell in love with many famous cats, wearables, and products.

Welcome to our November edition of When Fashion and Nature Collide. On the third Wednesday of each month, we will post a new collaborative edition. You will see art, beautiful fashion and accessories styled by Dominique from 3C Style, flowers and beautiful art by Darren from the Arty Plantsman, and original art from me Lisa@Lismore Paper. Soon we will be opening a shop on Threadless which offers our products under the Fashioned By Nature Label. Crossing our paws it will open December 1st just in time for Christmas! If you missed the t-shirt post, click here.

So what’s all the purring about…

GARFIELD

I am partial to this feline. I remember receiving a stuffed toy in the 2nd grade and cherishing it for years. A little secret, I still have it. Creating art inspired by this famous cat was fun. Watercolor and digital enhancement made this #eyeCatching piece a bit art deco. I completed a few different versions. I enjoy adding eyelashes to everything I can, as you can see in the first photo above. Darren’s flower the Calochortus barbatus hit it on the mark, it’s a beauty. Dominique’s style from the cat print shirt and perfect complimenting hat mimic Garfield. Doesn’t she look gorgeous!

CHESHIRE CAT

The Cheshire Cat is a fictional cat popularized by Lewis Carroll in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. This cat is mostly remembered for the wicked smile that I just love. The incredibly witty character has the most wonderful quotes. My favorite quote, “Every adventure requires a first step.”

Dominique looks beautiful and the colors match this Cheshire Cat perfectly…look at those cattails! Darren’s flower looks like a wonderland creation, I love the bell shape. For the quote art, I layered paper and you can see Dominique’s colors have been placed on top then blended into the paper. The eyes are layers of water color splotches with colored pencil on top and the smile was created using the technique of dropping water onto the paper in a pattern then letting the color fill in. I scanned at high quality, then added the pupils and shadows digitally along with the lettering.

DOMINIQUE’S DIY TEASER

Look out for Dominique’s DIY using this cat image. I think she may even have a dog in this DIY, we will have to wait to see.

A T-Shirt Teaser – Fashioned By Nature

Express Yourself

It is the ultimate of casual attire. They started out as undershirts for the boys in the military. In the 1950’s after Marlon Brando wore one in A Streetcar Named Desire, the t-shirt finally achieved status as fashionable outerwear garment, and ever since, they have grown wild in popularity. Everyone has t-shirts worldwide. They are simple, comfortable, and easy to wash after a days work or play. The best part they can make a statement about who you are and what you love, support or believe in.

I am so excited to announce that Dominique from 3C Style, Darren from the Arty Plantsman and myself will be launching a new shop, Fashioned By Nature, on Threadless.

Halloween Ephemera 1876

Memories is what this conjures. Days of trick or treating with family and friends, picking out just the right costume, and filling that bag full of candy. Visit 3C Style DIY post for a fun way to make your own Halloween fun with my refurbished ephemera. Taking an image from the public domain and making it new again is a great way to get the vintage flair with a modern day edge. Look at these great ideas! Roda’s little black kitten was inspiration for us!

The Blackbird

There is so much mystery surrounding a blackbird. Writers love to pour their souls into words on paper, artists paint black feathers with a cast of blue, and fashion mimics the colors and flow of the mysterious creature that calls and cackles a chilling tune. My favorite, The Raven. by Edgar Allan Poe. (published 1845)

“Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore, While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.”

This inspires art, fashion, and costume. Speaking of costume, you have to see our team, it was so much fun! I have a total costume crush! Look below at Domenic, she styled this perfectly.

Orb Spider

When I originally saw this, I emailed Dominique telling her she is a perfect cat woman. Then when I saw the Orb Spider inspired by Roda and heard the back story on these photos (friends having some serious fun in Montreal) I knew what I had to do! Sorry Dominique, I had to turn you yellow, and turn you into an Orb Spider. Thank you kindly for allowing me to let my creativity run with this. The orb spider and spider web was captured beautifully by Roda. I believe Darren captured the original picture of Dominique pointing out the great webs. Doesn’t she make a great superhero!

Autumn Paper

Inspired by these photos of Dominique, I thought a nice Autumn Paper would be in order. Using ephemera backing, watercolor, and a bit of acrylic I wanted to capture the colors of Autumn. A friendly little spider ventured onto the page.

Garden and Fashion Ephemera

Bee Hive Clothing House Bee and Dahlia Paper 8x10 jpeg

Besides looking for the next new art supply to try, I’m always on the hunt for ephemera. Antique illustrations have a patina that make them special. Finding old garden periodicals that have hit the public domain are like Christmas. Many are in need of repair from age, light, or water damage. Once they have been restored, they make such beautiful clipart to create a new piece.

Last night I stayed up way too late to work on the wine colored dahlia that I have layered into the piece above. Bees, fashion, and art are some of my favorite things 🙂 The dahlia was pulled from a garden periodical from the 1800’s. The color has been restored and some of the petals on the bloom and foliage were repaired.

This is set to print as an 8 x 10 but can be resized. Free for personal use. Click on the image to save to your device.

I hope you have a beautiful Sunday!

Much love,

Lisa

When Fashion and Nature Collide – A Garden Party

Beehive Lady Postcard

In this edition of When Fashion and Nature Collide we invite you to a garden party. Imagine strolling through a manicured garden filled with lively colored flowers, beautiful critters collecting pollen, and butterflies putting on a show of their own. Linens topped with English lace tablecloths and beautiful flower arrangements adorning the tables. Fine china with tea sandwiches and our favorite summer salads. Well plated desserts and flower infused ice in the refreshing spritzer. Beautiful fashion and show stopping accessories, friends and family mingling with smiles. Take time to enjoy the warm, sweet feel of summer. We are in full bloom and working hard to get the garden ready.

The above piece is set on a 5 x 7 post card. The blond girl has a bee hive for hair, a peony flower dress, and surrounded by her sweet honey bees made of water color flowers and leaves. Roda’s bees including her 2 Queens, Thelma and Louise have been a great source of inspiration. See Thelma on the hair and Louise on the shoulder. More to come on one of my favorite pieces, the bee.

My contribution to this months edition is a whimsy one. Using mostly watercolor paintings and the computer, I created many pieces inspired by Dominique from 3C Style, Roda from Growing Self, and Darren from the Arty Plantsman. Make sure to click on the links to complete this edition of When Fashion and Nature Collide. Find the links below to download the art in this post for your own personal use.

Let’s take a walk through the garden gallery…

BEE CUZ! I had so much fun creating this bee using watercolor flowers, leaves, and careful placement. The best part about this, Dominique and I were able to collaborate on this particular piece, she made this into a fashion statement with the tee design and slogan. I love it so much! Stay tuned to where you can purchase this fantastic tee!

The pattern of this particular butterfly captured us so much, a Kitten Heel shoe design was created. The color of the flower and butterfly blend so nicely. Look how the outfit matches perfectly. It’s only natural to want shoes 🙂 Using colored pencil, I was able to capture the circle pattern of the butterfly.

Butterfly Kitten Heel and Inspiration

What is a garden party without butterfly wings. This watercolor girl needed a bit of whimsy added. This piece is set on a 5 x 7 post card and the shoe pattern textile. The dark-haired butterfly girl has a watercolor peony flower dress, and has colored pencil butterfly wings.

When Fashion & Nature Collide – Mixed Media

May Art

Mixed media is a technique involving the use of two or more artistic mediums, such as ink and pastel, digital painting and watercolor, photos and line layering that are combined in a single composition. Decorative paper can be used as a filler background between the different layers of mediums. Antique book plates and stained paper can be used as a part of the foundation or placed over an object to give it an aged patina. This type of art provides endless possibilities. Just an example is altered objects, including books and boxes, handmade greeting cards, artist trading cards (ATCs), tags, art journals, and book/journal making.

This month we had so many choices for this edition of When Fashion and Nature Collide. The above image is my contribution to the project. Sketching and creating smart objects to place about is one of my favorite things.

I was instantly drawn to these pairings for this month. My art inspiration was fueled by these wonderful images by Dominique from 3C Style, Darren from Arty Plantsman, and Roda from Growing Self. Please visit their sites to get a fantastic view of When Fashion and Nature Collide.

Let’s talk about inspiration!

This Partridge Plymouth Rock, Silk dress, Venetian mask from Italy, and vintage feather hat sparked so many ideas. Even though the mask didn’t make the final piece of my art, it’s a fun piece that looks great in a 5×7 as an accent piece for a grouping, or for an art and craft.

This won my heart at first sight. The yellow coat, blue butterfly, and the moraea flower blend together like they were made from the same fabric. The stunning colors play off each other perfectly. That beautiful blue is my “it” color this year. Visit Darren’s site Arty Plantsman for his better than life drawing of  the moraea. I am in complete awe of his artistry. I am just over the moon about this. This is also the color portion of my contribution and one of the sketches Leopard Fray on vintage lined library paper below.

Pink! I love pink, so this struck a chord with me. The whole look of the flowers that I want in my own garden, amazing jeans, and a handbag that is beyond beautiful. I could not help but want to sketch these jeans and shoes. Two of the three sketches are part of the contribution and all can be used as a set.
