When Fashion & Nature Collide – Holiday Edition

Hugs, Comfort & Joy

Hugs equal love and also give us strength. They heal us, relieve loneliness, depression, anxiety and stress. Most important, hugs create comfort and joy. It’s wonderful to get a hug from your favorite person. What else is wonderful…the hug of a soft blanket, or scarves and gloves that keep us toasty warm. A nice cable knit sweater, warm socks, and a fuzzy hat that snuggle up just like a hug.

Welcome to our December and holiday edition of When Fashion and Nature Collide, Hugs, Comfort & Joy. On the third Wednesday of each month, we will post a new collaborative edition. You will see art, beautiful fashion and accessories styled by Dominique from 3C Style, flowers and beautiful art by Darren from the Arty Plantsman, and original art from me Lisa@Lismore Paper. Be sure to check out each blog for the full edition.

Hugs-What we love

The Polar Bear

Dominique via Darren found these great wildlife photos with this polar bear. The wildlife brings great happiness to our hearts. The polar bear is a hypercarnivorous bear whose native range lies largely within the Arctic Circle, encompassing the Arctic Ocean, its surrounding seas and surrounding land masses. Lets not forget about Canada. It is home to approximately 16,000 of the estimated 20,000 polar bears in the global polar regions. Look at Domenic, she and the polar bear are enjoying their environment. I was inspired by the footprint of this enormous bear and Christmas. Darren’s flower, Hepatica Japonica, inspired the purple recolor of the hat, scarf, and gloves.

The Snow Owl

Such a beauty. To see a snow owl in the wild takes your breath away.
The snow owl is a large, white owl of the typical owl family. Snow owls are native to cold regions in North America. Males are almost all white, while females have more flecks of black plumage. Juvenile snow owls have black feathers until they turn white. Such beautiful feather patterns that inspire artists, pattern makers, and designers around the world.

The White Moth

White as Winter. The purity of the white moth never escapes me. I love the myth, this is why I was so moved to assist in the making of the first photo below. Because of different beliefs surrounding this, I only want to suggest you look up the myths if interested. Moths are similar creatures and their differences abound but all of these insects fall under the encompassing order name of Lepidoptera. Similarities between Butterflies an Moths include their scale-like hairs that cover their respective bodies and deliver their various recognizable patterns and colors along the wings that we see. Comfort & Joy – Tags, Gifts, and Style

Pretty packages to our family and friends brings us joy. Cable knits and warmth bring us comfort. With the holidays upon us, we take care in decorating our homes with special trinkets that hold holiday past, present, and future. Just like my favorite holiday story by Charles Dickens, The Christmas Carol. Paper goods and soft lighting are some of my favorite things. I also love homemade paper tags.

The Blackbird

There is so much mystery surrounding a blackbird. Writers love to pour their souls into words on paper, artists paint black feathers with a cast of blue, and fashion mimics the colors and flow of the mysterious creature that calls and cackles a chilling tune. My favorite, The Raven. by Edgar Allan Poe. (published 1845)

“Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore, While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.”

This inspires art, fashion, and costume. Speaking of costume, you have to see our team, it was so much fun! I have a total costume crush! Look below at Domenic, she styled this perfectly.

Orb Spider

When I originally saw this, I emailed Dominique telling her she is a perfect cat woman. Then when I saw the Orb Spider inspired by Roda and heard the back story on these photos (friends having some serious fun in Montreal) I knew what I had to do! Sorry Dominique, I had to turn you yellow, and turn you into an Orb Spider. Thank you kindly for allowing me to let my creativity run with this. The orb spider and spider web was captured beautifully by Roda. I believe Darren captured the original picture of Dominique pointing out the great webs. Doesn’t she make a great superhero!

Autumn Paper

Inspired by these photos of Dominique, I thought a nice Autumn Paper would be in order. Using ephemera backing, watercolor, and a bit of acrylic I wanted to capture the colors of Autumn. A friendly little spider ventured onto the page.

Every dog has its Day!

Creating the art for this edition was challenging, fun, and one of my favorite loves, dogs! Using watercolor, acrylic paints, digital scanning, and graphics I began to create these pieces back in July. Dominique had an idea for a t-shirt using some of our friends on WordPress furry family members. When she asked me to create art for this project, I was thrilled. Once she and Darren gained permission from all our friends, the painting started with one of my favorites, Walter. I enjoy the stories about all of these dogs of WordPress. (Check out the links to them below).  Our own Darren modeled with two beautiful dogs while on his trip. This tee paired with a jean jacket is fun and fabulous! I also like the contrast between the shades of jean material with the coloring on the doggie tee.

When Fashion and Nature Collide – March

Photo Mar 17, 10 41 35 AM

Fashion and Nature flow together seamlessly. I love the texture and vivid colors paired with a vintage flair that spans across decades. Timeless pieces regardless of the trend. Nature is an inspiration for my art as it is paired with elements of texture, ephemera, and pieces like lace and etchings. I also love to walk outside and take in the world around me. The palette that surrounds us in life is full of magic. Mother Nature truly allows for endless possibilities. If you take a look in your closet, you will find the same. Textile artists have captured the same feel and have used those same color palettes for centuries. I can only imagine that they were also inspired by their surroundings so many years ago. Take a look at how they pair…

In my art, I use the layers to achieve the collision between these worlds. It amazes me that a flower or a critter grows to be breathtakingly beautiful with lively colors that would not be paired together normally. It isn’t until we see them in bloom or running in the wild that we pair these colors together. We use them in so many ways without thinking about the a original inspiration.

March Art Sample

On the third Wednesday of each month, you will see the collision of fashion and nature. My portion of this wonderful collaboration is an art piece that brings all the elements together. I will also include an item or two collaborated from the pieces of the members of our team. I will also share posts here on my blog from Darren, Dominique, and Roda. Magical Time of the Year

pexels-photo-195030

Lights are twinkling, snow is falling, blanketing the ground in glittery white, at least where I live. The hustle and bustle will soon be calmed by everyone coming together in their own traditions. Each is unique and special, reminding us it’s the time of year for reflecting and setting goals. It’s also the perfect opportunity to make changes around the home, maybe even personal and professional ones.

I love the family time between Christmas and New Year, it’s like hitting the reset button. It’s also the time I take to reflect on the improvements I need to make. I have always feared judgment, it’s often hard for me to not be guarded. This is an improvement I need to make in 2018. My creativity suffers because of this and I plan on changing this. Perhaps creative therapy 🌞

I have been so inspired by many of you. You know who you are, I read and comment on your blogs daily. Thank you for making this community so much fun. You put magic into everyday life with your stories and projects. Inspiration is key to a peaceful soul. All of you have been a blessing beyond words and the talent out there is spectacular.

I wish all of you the most glorious holiday season and many blessings 🎄🎉

Free Halloween Printables

Grinning carved, candlelit pumpkins flicker in the night.

Werewolves howl as trick-or-treaters scream in delight.

Witches brew their finest dragon breath brood..

Zombies in an ugly mood

Darkness and dread fills a Banshees cries.

Green monsters with thirteen eyes.

Ghost and goblins dance under the moonlight.

Cloaked in darkness hungry vampires bite.

Ghouls wander in cemeteries, robbing a freshly dug grave.

Bats by the millions fly from their cave.

Shadows lurk, scary monsters hide just out of sight.

Spooky houses invite neighbors with a single porch light.

Happy haunting to all,

but watch where you call.

Hairy, black spiders spin their invisible weave.

don’t become their treat on All Hallows Eve!

Haunted

GhostinFrontofHollyHotel-960x640

I adore Halloween. This time of year, I often am taken back to my first job. It was seasonal, just for the month of October. My high school had an advertisement to work the haunted house located in the Holly Hotel, it was the next city over from where I lived. My friend and I decided it would be a perfect and fun way to make a little money.

I have to say, I was really excited with the thought of being a scarer at the restaurant filled with its own resident ghosts. There is a long and rich history of this historic hotel site. The entire block has stories of ghosts and happenings along what is dubbed “Battle Alley”. Check out their site, Holly Hotel to meet some of their resident ghosts. Unfortunately, they have discontinued the haunted house on the third floor ages ago, probably due to insurance reasons. All of the pictures on this post are from their site.

hotelfire1913-177x121

When we arrived, we (potential scarers) were ushered to the second floor to fill out an application, show proof we were able to work, and hired on the spot. We sat, getting to know each other. There were about twenty of us in total. Everyone was from the surrounding school districts. About half of us faced the double door to the hallway and the other half faced the street with a few, fairly large, windows with heavy drapes covering the windows. The room was filled with teenage noise that immediately stopped when a drape opened slightly as if someone was looking down at the street below. Problem was, there was nobody pulling back that drape. I remember looking at the shock on the others faces and thinking this was going to be pretty cool. I don’t know if it was a set-up or not, or if it was just one of the resident ghosts, but we were about to join their side.

For the month, I worked side by side with vampires, werewolves, ghosts, chain saw massacre man, Freddie, mad scientist, and zombies. Scaring all kinds of people who dared to enter the third floor. StarsWe had an encounter or two at the stairway with what we thought was a ghost, but it was really hard to tell when you are playing one yourself. I like to think that the resident ghosts enjoyed themselves during that month. Who knows, maybe they were able to show themselves from time to time.

It was an incredible experience I will never forget. I always laugh, telling people it was the best job I ever had. I made friends that I would not have met unless I had this opportunity. The Holly Hotel is an absolute wonderful place any time of the year, but it holds a special place in my heart.

To those of you who celebrate Halloween, or take the kiddos Trick or Treating, remember the Teal Pumpkin Project make great memories, have a safe and fantastic Halloween!!

With much love,

Lisa
